Visiting West Virginia
This summer, the opportunities for all sorts of outdoor activities are virtually endless, but as fall breezes begin to make their way in, calendars in communities from Charleston and Chapmanville to Morgantown and Berkeley Springs begin to fill with special events, and family-friendly activities.
70 miles east of Charleston, Summersville is the perfect destination for a relaxing day trip. On September 17th and 18th, Summerville’s Kirkwood Winery presents the 2016 Grape Stomping Wine Festival. Kids and adults alike are welcome to come and turn their skin purple with grape stomping and grape eating contests, but the kids will have to sit out the sampling of Kirkwood’s selection of wines. The fun starts at 11 a.m. both days.
The arts are alive in Charleston, as evidenced by the Downtown Charleston ArtWalk. On the evening of the third Thursday of each month, the downtown area is the setting for self-guided walking tours of the city's shops, galleries, and venues, as they open up to showcase the creations and performances of local artists.
Summer sunshine presents the perfect opportunity to get out and explore West Virginia's lush landscape, and the best way to cover the most ground is by packing up the car and embarking on a scenic driving tour. Communities like Bridgeport make great day trip destinations and countless roadside attractions and historic sites provide plenty of reasons to get out and stretch.
Before you know it, school is back in session at West Virginia University and to many students and sports fans in Morgantown, that means one thing – Mountaineers Football. Going to battle the NCAA’s tough Big 12 Conference, the Division I team defends Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium, select Saturdays through the end of December.
Across the state to the southwest, Gilbert and Chapmanville residents and visitors take to the trails on ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes at Hatfield-McCoy Trails. On October 6th through the 10th, the 2016 Hatfield-McCoy National Trailfest brings riders from all over the country to experience rugged romps like the Rockhouse Trail and compete for cash prizes. The festivities are also set to include kids’ activities, a trail run, fireworks, and more entertainment and games.
