Visiting West Virginia

It’s the season in Charleston for the West Virginia Power. Follow the minor league baseball games at Appalachian Power Park, a classic spring and summer pastime. Looking for culture? Try the Clay Center, Charleston Civic Center, Little Theater and Municipal Auditorium. For a fun night out, Charelston’s East End neighborhood is fill with an eclectic mix of dining and night life options. If you visit in June, don’t miss the East End Garden Showcase. Shoppers be sure to check-out Charleston’s Bridge Road Shops, Renaissance Village and Capitol Market. Charleston is surrounded by fresh air and beautiful West Virginia outdoors, with the Kanawha State Forest just south of downtown.

Morgantown, near the northern West Virginia state line, hosts the 2013 Wild Warrior Challenge on April 20th – a fun spring challenge filled with obstacles, including a mud bog, water slide and tube crawl. Join Morgantown’s Wild Warrior Challenge in Mylan Park and enjoy a day of springtime fun.

The Scottish Heritage Society of North Central West Virginia celebrates the Celtic heritage of West Virginia, May 3rd – 5th. Held in the communities of Clarksburg and Bridgeport, the 2013 Scottish Festival & Celtic Gathering marks the 12th year for the events. Enjoy a Saturday full of events at Bridgeport City Park, evening entertainment at the Bridgeport High School, and a parade and Kirkin of the Tartans on Sunday.

How about some Irish Road Bowling? Berkeley Springs hosts the outdoor fun, July 21st. All are welcome to participate at Cacapon Resort State Park, 10-miles south of Berkeley Springs. The course has a lot of shade and is mostly downhill, making this a great day for beginning road bowlers.

Mountain biking enthusiasts mark August 11th on the calendar for the Black Bear 40k Mountain Bike Race in West Virginia’s Kanawha State Forest. Located south of Charleston and the Kanawha River, the state forest features courses for expert riders, and beginner and sport riders. Choose your challenge, the Black Bear sport course is 30k and the beginner 20k, and enjoy some of the best trails in West Virginia in Kanawha State Forest.
