Harpers Ferry National Historical Park
History buffs will love a visit to the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park – probably the most well known historical site in West Virginia. Set at the intersection of the Potomac River and Shenandoah River, this National Monument is located at the confluence of Maryland, Virginia, and of course, West Virginia – less than 50 miles from Berkeley Springs. The 4,000-acre National Historical Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and consists of the historic city of Harpers Ferry and a section of the Appalachian Trail.
Historical points of interest in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park include the B & O Railroad Potomac River Crossing, St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, and the preserved Shenandoah Street. Don’t miss the Storer College/Niagara Movement Museum, the Civil War Museum, and the Black Voices Museum. Harpers Ferry is open daily, so be sure to travel back in time during your trip to West Virginia.
Another historic park in the Mountain State is the Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park in Parkersburg. Located on an Ohio River island – reached only by sternwheeler riverboat – the park is home to the Blennerhasset Mansion replica. Stroll through the Blennerhasset Museum of Regional History, or take advantage of carriage rides, picnic spots, and biking and hiking trails.
Less than two hours south of Blennerhassett Island, the West Virginia State Capitol is located in the capital city of Charleston. Home to the Governor of West Virginia and West Virginia Legislature, the capitol is found on the National Register of Historic Places, and is the tallest building in the state. Set along the Kanawha River, the capitol building's front plaza includes commemorations to Abraham Lincoln and Stonewall Jackson. Head to the West Virginia Cultural Center for a tour of the capitol, and explore the many other historic sites in Charleston and West Virginia.
