Sports action fills Charleston’s own March madness featuring West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournaments, and West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission boys and girls basketball tournaments. Visit Berkeley Springs for a soak in the historic baths. Charleston’s Vandalia Gathering in May celebrates West Virginia history and culture. Beech Fork Lake State Park near Barboursville, and parks throughout the state are soon filled with West Virginia’s famous summer outdoor recreation. Morgantown’s West Virginia University Mountaineers are on the diamond at Hawley Field – sure sign it’s time for spring and summer fun.
The Capitol Complex in Charleston hosts West Virginia’s Vandalia Gathering on Memorial Day. The 2012 celebration of WV’s heritage and culture is May 25th through 27th. The Vandalia Gathering features traditional Appalachian music, complete with the sounds of fiddles, banjos, mandolins and guitars filling the Capitol grounds and West Virginia State Theater. Join in square dances and flatfooting on the Dance Stage or watch traditional dance troops in the State Capitol Great Hall. Browse the craft circle for Raku, pottery and folk toys. The Vandalia Gathering is all about West Virginia’s rich traditions and heritage.
Join West Virginia Power baseball fans for the 2012 home season opener April 12th. Home field for the Power is Appalachian Power Park in downtown Charleston, next to the Clay Center for Arts and Sciences at the corner of Morris Street and Lewis Street. Serious fans get a jump on the fun at the season opener on April 5th in Hagerstown. Come on out and cheer on the future stars of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Charleston’s summer calendar is filled with fun events. After Memorial Day’s Vandalia Gathering, don’t miss the 2012 FestivALL Charleston June 15th through the 24th, featuring 10 days of live music, performances and exhibits. The 2012 West Virginia North-South All-Star Football Game is hosted at Charleston’s Laidley Field on June 19th, showcasing the talents of 72 of West Virginia’s top senior football stars. Remember, the 4th of July is a wonderful Charleston celebration and a city tradition.
